Today's observance of Halloween with scary costumes and trick-or-treating evolved over time from a combination of All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Halloween or "All Hallows Eve," is the vigil of All Hallows Day, now known as the Solemnity of All Saints (All Saints Day), which is celebrated on Nov. 1. Each fall, families and friends are invited to purchase daffodil bulbs to be planted on the graves of their loved ones in Calvary Cemetery in Little Rock. That way, by spring, the bright yellow flowers become a living memorial to all those who have been laid to rest in the historic cemetery. For a minimum donation of $10, cemetery staff will plant a group of five daffodils on a grave. Proceeds support the upkeep of the cemetery grounds. Cursillo (pronounced kur-see-yo) is a Spanish word meaning "little" or "short course." This short course for adults begins on Thursday evening and continues through Sunday night. During these four days participants live and work together listening to talks given by priests and laity. They also participate in Mass and pray together. The talks focus on grace, faith, piety, the sacraments, evangelization and much more. A Cursillo is an encounter with Christ. Junior High Spectacular, a one-day event hosted by the Diocese of Little Rock, will be held Sunday, Nov. 6 in the McCauley Center at Mount St. Mary Academy in Little Rock for students in grades 6-8. This year’s theme, “He is the Way to Love,” will be presented by Oddwalk Ministries. The day will be filled with games, praise and worship, presentations by the Oddwalk Ministries, lunch and Mass. The Office of Catholic Schools recognized 11 teachers and administrators during the annual Arkansas Catholic Professional Day for Teachers at Christ the King Church in Little Rock Sept. 23. Thanks to three special events in Arkansas this summer, nearly $400,000 was donated for seminarian education in the Diocese of Little Rock. A Taste of Faith dinner was held May 21 at the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Springdale with about 300 attendees, raising about $55,000 for the seminarians. Sacred Heart of Jesus Church and the Knights of Columbus in Hot Springs Village held a seminarian endowment dinner with musical performance from the “Village Strings” on July 22.
