The word "advent" originates from the Latin "adventus" which means coming. The season of Advent, therefore, is the preparation for the coming of Jesus, first through the incarnation and ultimately, his coming again in glory at the end of time. This year it runs from Nov. 27 to Dec. 24. We are invited to reflect on the wondrous mystery of Jesus' birth as well as look with joy and hope to his return. We are called to repent of our sins, pray and draw ourselves closer to God. Advent also marks the beginning of the liturgical year in the Catholic Church. Unlike the secular year, which marks the passage of time, the liturgical year celebrates the sacred ... More
This Sunday, Nov. 20, we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. It recognizes that Jesus is king and savior of all people. Pope Pius XI established this feast in 1925 with his encyclical, "Quas Primas" ("In The First"). In this letter, he expressed deep concern for a growing secularism because many had "thrust Jesus Christ and his holy law out of their lives" believing "these had no place either in private affairs or in politics." Many of us have experienced the recent presidential election as a mixed blessing. We are relieved that President-elect Trump opposes abortion and plans to nominate anti-abortion justices to the Supreme Court. Indeed, many people voted for him for that very reason. But we are also dismayed by his divisive rhetoric. The purpose of this letter is to remind all of us that this election has not changed the mission of the Church ... More

Parish subsidies and school scholarship funds cover $3.1 million, which leaves a need for $500,000 in donations through this appeal. In a letter to previous donors, Bishop Anthony B. Taylor expressed the need to support Arkansas' Catholic schools. "Catholic schools are an integral part of the teaching mission of the Church because they assist ... More
National Vocation Awareness Week is being celebrated Nov. 6-12. This annual observance of the Catholic Church in the United States is designed to focus on vocations to the priesthood, religious life and diaconate. It is a time to encourage young people to ask themselves: "To what vocation in life is God calling me?" It is also an opportunity to bring awareness to and pray for those already in discernment of one of these vocations. Parish and school communities across the nation are encouraged to include, during the first week in November, prayer and special activities that focus ... More

As we approach election day on Nov. 8, Catholics in the United States are called to educate themselves on the candidates and issues, pray and then vote their conscience. Download it in English or Spanish. Accompanying this document are study guides, videos, prayer suggestions ... More
