A Cursillo weekend for men will be held Feb. 19-22 at St. John Catholic Center in Little Rock. The cost is $200 per person, but no one will be turned away if they are unable to pay. All applicants must be sponsored by someone who has previously attended a Cursillo weekend. Applications are available by email from area Ultreya leaders or Ed Moix, Pre-Cursillo chairperson, at ed.moix59@gmail.com.
Cursillo weekends begin on a Thursday evening and end on Sunday afternoon, during which participants listen to courses (talks) presented by clergy and laypeople, pray, have small group discussion and celebrate Mass together. Retreats and small groups are offered separately for men and women. After the weekend, cursillistas (those who attended the retreat) are divided into small groups to meet on an ongoing, weekly basis.
The purpose of the Cursillo movement is to provide a foundation for participants to develop a deeper understanding of what it means to be fully Catholic by being fully Christian. This is experienced through three essential encounters, the encounter with oneself, the encounter with Christ and then an encounter with others.
"Ultreyas" (pronounced ul-tray-ahs) or reunions bring men and women together for larger gatherings of continuing education and may be held monthly, quarterly or annually. The Cursillo movement was relaunched in the Diocese of Little Rock by Bishop Anthony B. Taylor in 2022.
