Three sisters from the Catholic Teachers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Maestras Católicas del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús) religious order will begin their ministry at St. Augustine Church in Dardanelle and St. John Church in Russellville in January. Bringing the Mexican order to the Diocese of Little Rock was made possible through the Catholic Extension’s U.S.-Latin American Sisters Exchange Program. The program is funded by an initial $3 million grant from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. The program will span five years and involve 10 Latin American congregations, sending more than 30 women religious to dioceses throughout the United States. ... More
Each fall, families and friends are invited to purchase daffodil bulbs to be planted on the graves of their loved ones in Calvary Cemetery in Little Rock. That way, by spring, the bright yellow flowers become a living memorial to all those who have been laid to rest in the historic cemetery. For a minimum donation of $10, cemetery staff will plant a group of five daffodils on a grave. Proceeds support the upkeep of the cemetery grounds. ... More
A special collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) will be taken up in all parishes Nov. 22-23. CCHD works to uphold the dignity of human life by breaking the cycle of poverty in the United States through grants to local community-based groups that create jobs, improve education and strengthen neighborhoods. Twenty-five percent of the collection stays in our diocese to fund small, local projects and 75 percent is sent to the national CCHD office to be used for the national grants. The Diocese of Little Rock has received more than $750,000 during the past 10 years to distribute as grants across Arkansas to local groups and projects such as Birthright, Our House and Helping Hand. ... Pope Francis proclaimed a Year of Consecrated Life to be celebrated from Nov. 30, 2014 to Feb. 2, 2016. This special observance begins on the First Sunday of Advent and ends on the World Day of Consecrated Life. The theme "Wake Up the World" is designed to educate Catholics about religious life and promote religious vocations through special events such as open houses at convents and monasteries, joint service projects between the religious and laity, and prayer with religious, such as vespers or holy hours, at religious houses that are open to the public. ... The public is invited to attend the 20th annual Red Mass invoking the Holy Spirit on judges, attorneys, government officials, law professors and students Friday, Oct. 3 at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Andrew in Little Rock. The 2014 Senior High Youth Rally will be held at Catholic High School in Little Rock on Sunday Oct. 12. This event is sponsored by the diocesan Catholic Youth Ministry Office and is open to youth in grades 9-12. It includes praise and worship music, a guest speaker, lunch and Mass. This year's featured presenter is Greg Wasinski, a speaker at youth rallies nationwide, including the 2013 National Catholic Youth Convention. Through his "Let Me Be" Ministries he uses Church teaching and real-life examples to show how faith and everyday life come together. The rally will be held from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. ... More
