We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
By Debbie Eckert, St. Joseph Church, Conway
Standing beside her, you hear the sound of the heavy cross as Jesus approaches. His gaze of love pierces your heart. Setting your heart upon him, there is no turning back. Others in the crowd turn their gaze away from him. They are fearful for there is a cost to following Jesus. You and Veronica know this. You ask yourself, "What can I do to help Jesus?" He asks us to offer what little we have. Will you take a chance for love's sake? As Veronica wipes Jesus' face, his image remains on the cloth. Veronica's name means "true image." Are you a true image of Jesus? Do your actions portray Jesus' actions? Will you wipe the face of the crying baby, the poor, the immigrant, the addicted, your neighbor? There is another action here. It is that of Jesus. He shows us humility by receiving. Can you put aside your pride and ego and cry out for help when in need? Will you be humble and let others leave the image of Jesus on your heart as they minister to you? Pause and pray for the grace to give and receive in humility.
