Father Nelson Rubio, associate pastor of St. Theresa Church in Little Rock, will celebrate the annual Veterans Day Mass at 9:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 11 at the National Cemetery in Little Rock. Because seating is limited, participants are encouraged to bring their own chairs. All are invited to attend. The Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus color corps will present the colors. Patriotic songs will be sung and taps will be played at the end of the ceremony.

In addition, Catholic parishes and schools across Arkansas host programs to honor veterans. To find events in your area, contact a parish or school near you.

The annual observance of Veterans Day in the United States on Nov. 11 has it roots in the armistice that ended World War I in 1918. The armistice between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed thereafter that Nov. 11 be observed as "Armistice Day." In 1954, Congress passed legislation that renamed the federal holiday "Veterans Day," in recognition of the service of veterans of all U.S. wars. Prayer for Troops

The following prayer is for the safe return of all service men and women who are currently serving and in harm's way. For more prayers from the U.S. bishops, visit their website.

All-powerful and ever-living God,
when Abraham left his native land
and departed from his people
you kept him safe through all his journeys.
Protect these soldiers.
Be their constant companion and their strength in battle,
their refuge in every adversity.
Guide them, O Lord, that they may return home in safety.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
